GOLF
Islandside Course, on the south end of Longboat Key at The Resort, The
Islandside Golf Course offers 18-hole championship golf in a lush tropical
setting. Designed by Bill Mitchell and opened for play in 1960, this 6,792
yard, par 72 "watery challenge" is bordered by the Gulf of
Mexico on the west. During construction of this barrier island golf
course, canals were dredged bringing water hazards into play on all 18
holes. All of the greens, sand traps, and cart paths were renovated in
1994. Greens were planted with Tifdwarf grass. 5,000 palm trees and pink
and white blooming Oleanders line the fairways and canals making it one of
Florida's most beautiful and challenging golf courses.
Harbourside Course opened for play in 1982. Harbourside
consists of three nine-hole courses designed by Willard Byrd of Atlanta.
The Red Course is 3,323 yards; the White Course, 3,426 yards; and the Blue
Course, 3,386 yards. The championship layout provides a completely
different golf experience from the Islandside Course. Bordered by Sarasota
Bay to the east, the course plays through virgin stands of live oak, sabal
palm, strangler fig, palmetto, fiddleleaf palm, Washingtonian palm and
southern pine.
Both Islandside and Harbourside courses are PGA approved.
Each course has its own driving range and large fully-stocked pro shops
featuring expansive selections of golf fashions and equipment. "Golf
Magazine" has awarded The Resort at Longboat Key Club its Silver
Medal once again for 1995/1996.
Private lessons and group clinics are available, and PGA-certified pros
are available to organize tournament play at either of the two courses.
Each course offers a clubhouse facility with indoor/outdoor dining and
beverage service. Locker rooms are equipped with lounge areas, showers,
sauna, television, and an attendant on duty for towels and shoe cleaning.
Bag/club storage is complimentary. Golf club rental is available at both
courses.
