The Desert Inn
use to be one of the grandest resorts in Las Vegas. Then came Luxor,
Mirage, MGM and others to claim that title. But that isn't the case
anymore. The Desert Inn recently went through a $200 million expansion and
renovation. And once again it is one of the premier resorts in Las Vegas.
And The Desert Inn is the only resort in Las Vegas which has its own
championship golf course on site.
GOLF
CLUB: Not only does The Desert Inn Golf Club enjoy the unique
distinction of being the only golf course on the Las Vegas Strip, but it
is also the sole resort course in the world to have annually hosted the
PGA Tour, the LPGA Tour and Senior PGA Tour events; the PGA's Las Vegas
Invitational, the Senior PGA's Las Vegas Senior Classic, the LPGA PageNet
Tour Championship. Additionally, The Desert Inn Golf Club was home to the
PGA's Tournament of Champions from the event's inception in 1953 to 1966
annually.
When it comes to championship golf, The Desert Inn's world-famous course
is rich with tradition. The Desert Inn's world-famous course is rich with
tradition since its opening in 1952.
Surrounded by scores of
towering palms and mature trees, the highly-rated Lawrence Hughes-designed
course features sharp dog-legs and ocean beach sand bunkers. Water hazards
border nine of the 18 holes on the 7,193-yard, par 72 course. The Desert
Inn Resort & Casino's 1997 renovation plan altered the first hole to a
par 4 and the ninth hole to a par 5, which includes a rolling stream water
feature.
Each
desert Inn golf cart is equipped with the ProLink™ electronic
information service. This sophisticated global positioning system provides
guests the benefits of a personalized "caddy" as it profiles
each hole, determining distances off the tee and to the greens. Each hole
is graphically depicted on a screen and identifies such hazards as sand
traps, water and out of bounds areas. Guest have immediate electronic
access to the club house for beverage service and, in the event of an
emergency, the ProLink™ system can pinpoint the exact location of the
cart on the golf course.
THE
DESERT INN GOLF CLUB CHOSEN ONE OF THE BEST BY GOLF DIGEST: The
Desert Inn Golf Club at The Desert Inn Resort & Casino, honored as one
of America's Top 75 Resort Courses by Golf Digest Magazine, is the
only golf course in Nevada to earn this distinction.
The Golf Digest rating is the
result of a survey whereby 300 independent panelists evaluated resort
courses on the basis of shot values, playability, design balance,
memorability, aesthetics and conditioning. Golf Digest categorizes
a Resort Course as one which is directly affiliated with a hotel.
Dave Johnson, Director of Golf at The
Desert Inn, commented that, "It is a great honor to be named one of
the best resort courses in America, especially given the level of
competition represented by the many other courses." Johnson added
that, "This award is something everyone at The Desert Inn can be
proud of, particularly Jerome "Jonsey" Jones, our golf course
superintendent, and his staff."
